Chapter 11
Dlanna was afraid the party was going to start the minute they got down the hill, but Cadiz's mother, who'd trotted down ahead of them, was still in the yard greeting everybody when they pulled into the drive, and directing traffic with her hat. B.T. drove down into the driveway and parked next to a tractor with the biggest sail rig Delanna had ever seen. Sonny was nowhere in sight, but Cadiz was standing next to the solaris, scanning the crowd.
"Did she really keep trying to get me on the ham?" B.T. asked Delanna.
âAsk her yourself," Delanna said, tucking her jacket over Cleo so she couldn't be seen. Luckily, the scarab was still asleep. She hoped all the hustle and noise wouldn't wake her up. "Go on, B.T. Now's your chance."
He got out of the solaris and started toward Cadiz, looking determined, but before he'd taken two steps, Cadiz called out, "Jay! Jay Madog!" and flung herself off to meet Jay, who was heading toward them through the maze of solarises and wagons.
Cadiz slipped her arm through his. "Oh, Jay, I was afraid you'd turn off on the South Road," she said flirtatiously, and loudly, so B.T. would be sure to hear, "and I wouldn't get to say goodbye to you."
B.T. looked like he'd like to throttle her, and Delanna wished he would. She checked Cleo again and went to look for Sonny to tell him about Cadiz's mother's plans for a wedding celebration. She didn't think he'd want another shivaree any more than she did. She headed for the glittering emerald ranch house.
Cadiz's mother was standing at the door. "Now you all make yourselves at home," she was saying. "You've got the run of the place, as if you didn't know it. Food's in the kitchen, ambrosia's in the barn," she said, pointing. "Ham's in the house if you've got messages to send." She grabbed Delanna's arm. "You and I have to talk wedding party, Mrs. Tanner, and I want to know what's going on with B.T. and that daughter of mine," she said, pointing at Cadiz, who was standing next to Jay's van, laughing up at him. "I' d like to knock their heads together. It'll have to wait till after the shivaree, though. But I expect you'd like to get cleaned up before we get down to business."
"That would be wonderful," Delanna said, grateful to put off talking about the impending party. And a sonic sounded heavenly after the mud of the Flats. "You wouldn't have a sonic, would you?"
"A sonic? You can have a bath if you want. Cadiz!"
Cadiz's mother yelled in a voice that would have carried across the Salt Flats.
Cadiz disengaged herself from Jay and started over to them. "Cadiz, get over here and show Sonny's bride where she can get a bath instead of lollygagging with Jay Madog!â her mother said, and left Delanna to go help a woman lift two little girls out of a wagon.
"The bathtub's in the stillhouse," Cadiz said.
